In the modern business landscape, data is currency. Customer information, business records, employee data—if breached, it can cost you everything from revenue to reputation.
But data protection doesn't have to be complicated. There are fundamentals that apply to almost every business, regardless of size or industry.
1. Know What Data You Have - Before you can protect it, you need to inventory it. Where does it live? Who has access? How long do you keep it? This knowledge forms the foundation of everything else.
2. Control Access - Not everyone in your organization needs access to everything. Implement role-based access where employees can only reach the data they need to do their job. Change permissions when people leave or change roles.
3. Encrypt Sensitive Data - At rest and in transit. Modern encryption is fast, affordable, and increasingly built into standard business tools. Use it.
4. Back Up Everything Regularly - And test your backups. A backup that you can't restore is useless. Many ransomware victims discover this the hard way.
5. Update and Patch Continuously - Security vulnerabilities are discovered daily. Enable automatic updates whenever possible. Don't wait for a convenient time—vulnerabilities don't.
If you're not sure where your organization stands, start with a data inventory. Once you know what you're protecting, the protection strategy becomes clearer. Many of the tools you already use have built-in security features you may not be fully leveraging.
